PdfCraft alternatives
When PdfCraft is enough, when it isn't, and what to use instead.
Which PdfCraft is this?
This guide covers PdfCraft, the native desktop PDF editor written in Rust by the ArtCraft team: github.com/storytold/pdfcraft.
GitHub also hosts an unrelated project with a similar name, a browser-based collection of PDF tools built with Next.js by a different team: github.com/PDFCraftTool/pdfcraft. The two share no code or authors. If you want many single-purpose tools on a web page, that project may suit you; if you want a desktop app for reading, organizing and filling PDFs, read on.
PdfCraft (github.com/storytold/pdfcraft) is a free, open-source PDF editor from the ArtCraft team. It is good at reading, commenting, filling forms and moving pages around, and it is open about being alpha software. That leaves real gaps, and depending on your work another tool may simply be the better choice.
This page compares PdfCraft with the tools people most often weigh it against. We are an independent guide with no commercial relationship with any of these vendors, and none of the links below are affiliate links.
Where PdfCraft fits
- You read, search and annotate PDFs and want a free, native app with no account.
- You organize, combine, split or extract pages and want links, form fields and bookmarks to survive.
- You use Linux or FreeBSD, where Adobe Acrobat has no desktop app.
- You handle confidential files and want no telemetry and no cloud processing.
- You want to script PDF jobs, or let an AI agent work on PDFs, through pdfcraft-cli and its opt-in MCP server.
Where it falls short today
- Reliable editing of existing text, especially Chinese, Japanese, Korean and right-to-left scripts.
- Converting Office files to PDF, or exporting to Word with the layout intact.
- OCR for scanned pages in scripts other than Latin.
- Sending documents out for e-signature, signature tokens and long-term validation.
- Phones and tablets, which have no PdfCraft app, and full XFA forms, which are not supported yet.

PdfCraft alternatives: questions
For reading, commenting, filling forms, organizing pages and combining or splitting files, yes. It cannot yet edit existing text reliably, convert Office files or run e-signature workflows, which is where Acrobat is still ahead.
Yes. Adobe Acrobat and Foxit PDF Editor both edit the text and images already in a PDF. In PdfCraft that feature is still on the roadmap.
No. github.com/PDFCraftTool/pdfcraft is a browser-based PDF toolkit made by a different team. PdfCraft, covered on this site, is the desktop app at github.com/storytold/pdfcraft. They share only a similar name.
PDFsam Basic and Okular both run on Linux, and browser-based tools work there too. Adobe Acrobat and Foxit PDF Editor do not offer Linux desktop apps.
PdfCraft, PDFsam Basic and Okular work on local files. Acrobat and Foxit also work locally but offer cloud features you can choose to use. PDFCraftTool/pdfcraft says it processes files inside your browser.
